Southeast Asia is one of the most culturally diverse areas of the world. Traditionally, the area is considered to comprise 11 countries, Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

There are many different languages and ethnicities in the region. Southeast Asia was historically significantly influenced by Indian, Chinese, Muslim, and colonial cultures, which became core components of the region’s cultural and political institutions. Most modern Southeast Asian countries were colonized by European states, which has led to their influence still being present today and often seen in day-to-day items such as food.
