Little O’Tooles Campground: Creekside Camping of the Aberfeldy Backroads

Little O’Tooles is nestled alongside Donnelly’s Creek in the Victorian high country. This peaceful campground offers an escape for those seeking adventure on the Aberfeldy Backroad 4WD Tour.

Little O’Tooles Campground is the smaller sibling campsite to O’Tooles, just a little further up on Donnellys Creek Road. Depending on how you choose to get to the campground, it is accessible by easy 4WD tracks. If you are coming via Junction track and Merrington’s track from Walhalla Road, the terrain is a little more challenging and is not for drivers who don’t have confidence. The descent to the Aberfeldy River is pretty steep in places and slippery when wet.

Our Experience

Little O’Tooles was a really peaceful camp to use. When we arrived, there was one other family with small children, which meant we were in for a peaceful night.

There is access to Donnelly Creek for a refreshing dip. The site we were on had direct access to a shallow pool for a short swim, which was welcome in the heat.

The campground has basic facilities, such as fire pits, tables, and a pit toilet. However, you must bring your own funny roll.

There was a lot of bird life in the surrounding trees. The birds are really active here and start really early in the morning. In the summer, we started hearing them around 4 a.m.! So be prepared.

Things to Do in the Area

  • Aberfeldy Backroad 4WD Tour: Continue your adventure on the Aberfeldy Backroad, a scenic 4WD route that traverses the Victorian high country.
  • Donnelly’s Creek: Just take it easy by the creek. We chose to have a few swims and then kick back in the sun to relax.
  • Hiking: Venture out on foot and discover the surrounding forest trails.
  • Wildlife Spotting: Look for native wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, and a variety of bird species. We spotted a goanna, and there were warnings about wild dogs.
