Sandy Point Campground – Snowy River State Forest

4WDing and River Adventures

For those seeking a remote and somewhat isolated camping experience, Sandy Point Campground in the Snowy River State Forest is an ideal escape. Accessible only by 4WD around 7km along a dirt track, this campground offers stunning scenery, access to the Snowy River, and a true sense of wilderness, with no phone signal.

You could access this in an all-wheel drive, just be cautious if there is heavy rain around as it might be possible the access track gets slippy.

Our Experience

The journey to Sandy Point is a mini adventure in itself, requiring a reasonable 4WD vehicle (or a skilled AWD driver!) to navigate the unsealed track, which in places is fairly steep. In drier weather this is no issue and would probably not be an issue for most reasonable 4wds, it might get slippy in places in heavy rain, but we don’t have first-hand experience of this.

The campground is situated on the banks of the Snowy River, surrounded by towering gums and offering breathtaking views. We spent our days just relaxing in the sun and reading. In warmer weather swimming in the river would be a great option.

The nicest part of this campground is the isolation and stunning scenery, we did nothing more than relax, having had a long hectic period at home. It was fantastic just to de-stress.
